Updated 2011, March 17: ADS 2011 is shipping and available for download. Many thanks to all our Early Access program participants for all the feedback over the last few months.

It’s been an exciting few days here at Agilent EEsof EDA. On Thursday we launched the Early Access program for the latest version our flagship Advanced Design System tool. Dubbed ADS 2011.01, the new version is quantum leap forward in high frequency and high speed design.

We’ve added a multi-technology Workspace to replace the Project folder in prior versions. You add one Library per process technology to your Workspace. A Library can represent a PCB stackup, a BGA package stack up, a GaAs MMIC process technology, and so on.

Each piece of the design is called a Cell and each Cell resides inside the appropriate technology Library. You can have multiple Views of each Cell: schematic views, layout views, symbol views, and so on. You can drag and drop the Symbol of one Cell into the Schematic of another to organize you design hierachically. And you can use Dynamic Model Selection to control which View you want to simulate at any given time. This makes it easy to, say, determine how the parasitics in actual implementations cause the performance to deviate from ideal behavior.
